Howdy! Hi! How are you doing? Just fine, how about you? I did visit smores. What did you think? The smore looks good, just needs fleshing out. So for the assignment, stuff we still have to do: maybe a video (animoto) overview of ISP (this would be the storyboard), some infographics of the process and perhaps some kind of visual to support our selling points, a couple of lesson ideas that incorporate ISP. And a works cited somewhere or other….She discussed WC tonight. The WC for the animoto, photos we use, infographics are separate from th eWC for our research. From rubric: For example, an Animoto video on the Stripling Inquiry process for middle school students will include a Works Cited for the images or sounds that you use. But it will not include a Works Cited page of the resources related to your study of the inquiry process itself. For this or a similar project, you must submit a separate Works Cited or Consulted Word document for those resources.

That sounds good. I generally include a last slide with credits at the end of any video I make. That’s great.

Yes that seems right to me. So how should we go about this? My brain is fried. Perhaps divide and conquer. I am cool with divide and conquer. We can email with ideas over the next couple of days. Sounds good. Reminder, though, I have drill this weekend F-Sun going to Ft. Hood. Mostly I expect minimal internet capabilities and also time to do other work. This is killing me because it’s due on Friday! I know. Well I think that still sounds like a good plan. We can also maybe plan on one lesson idea apiece? I am definitely going to get started over the weekend. Best intentions, I just don’t ever have the energy to get much done after work during the week. I hear ya brother! I feel better having a plan! Absolutely, so we can see where we stand. So, when do we want to meet again? What works best for you? Again, I probably won’t be getting much of anything done prior to the weekend. Do you want to switch our meeting to Monday 3 Mar? My other group is taking a break b/c of this PP. My group is still planning on meeting at 7 Monday. We could meet after (sleepy eyes)? 8:30 Monday? or Keep tuesday. If we meet on Mon, potentially we could touch base again on Wed and Friday. Hopefully, Fri wont’ be needed; that’s too close. Yes I agree. I think Monday is probably a better idea. And I think shooting for Thursday night completion (if possible) is a good idea. Roger. Also, the other group never addressed that slogan, so if you want to use it here, feel free. Alright then - a very happy (what day is this) Tuesday? Ugh a very happy Tuesday! Goodnight! If I get any brainstorms regarding the video or anything I will send them your way. Yes, and vice versa. Talk to you later!

Do your students struggle with research? ISP may be the key
Key

Librarians are seeking a way to help their students succeed in research – we are giving them a valuable technique
Information Search Process (ISP) is a model of information retrieval developed by Carol Kuhlthau
Pic of Kuhlthau if possible
(note – none available so using pic of Rutgers)

Kuhlthau is a famous name within the library world
Kuhlthau was a librarian and saw her students go through similar steps while doing research projects
Pic of student at work, maybe struggling

Librarians will appreciate that ISP was developed as a result of what she observed as a librarian
After observing different groups of students, Kuhlthau developed her six stage model
Student working in a classroom

Kuhlthau’s model is unique because it not only looks at the actions involved in information retrieval, but also the feelings that accompany the process. To Kuhlthau, the affective part of information retrieval is just as important as the physical steps.
A face showing some strong emotion, to show affect

Librarians will appreciate that this considers the feelings of the researcher, because they deal with this side of research every time they work with students
Stage One: Initiation. Actions: Recognizing a need for information/understanding the task. Feelings: Uncertainty and apprehension
Image of a question mark

Stage Two: Selection. Actions: Identifying a general topic. Feelings: Anxiety moves to optimism
See what kind of image “topic” brings up. Otherwise, student researching.

Stage Three: Exploration. Actions: The student explores a range of information about the topic, looking for a focus. Feelings: Most difficult step; anxiety can lead to discouragement and feelings overwhelmed
Image of an anxious face

Stage Four: Formulation. Actions: Student decides on a specific focus within the general topic; begins to form a personal viewpoint. Feelings: increased clarity and confidence
Perhaps an image showing focus or clarity

Stage Five: Collection. Actions: Student gathers information about the project focus. Feelings: increased confidence, deepening interest.
Student working on research in a library – books all around

Stage Six: Presentation. Actions: The student presents his/her findings. Feelings: Relief if the student is satisfied with the process and product, disappointment, otherwise
Student doing a presentation in front of class

Librarians help facilitate the process when students falter, serving as organizer, locator, identifier, advisor, and counselor.

Librarians will recognize these as some of the roles they play when helping students with research.
Kuhlthau continued to support her work with research
Maybe image of research journal

It is good to know that this has been 1)Implemented for some time and 2)Supported with research
When teaching your students ISP, you can be confident that you are using a research-based process
Librarian or teacher in front of a class

Again, librarians can feel good about giving their students a tested process.
Help your students become stronger information seekers, and help them feel more comfortable and confident in the process
Happy student face – maybe holding an A+ paper

This is what librarians will want – their students to be successful and to have more positive feelings toward a process they often dread.

03 MAR
Hello there! How was the weekend?
Howdy! Long and tiring. How about yours? You got quite a bit of work on this project done. Great job. Yes I’ll bet you are tired. And thanks - I hope it is ok. My week is pretty crazy so I was hoping to get most of it done over the w/e.

Well, I haven’t gotten much done today as far as final products. Mostly been brainstorming and thinking about what you’ve already accomplished.

So, we still need to:
  • Fine tune anything that doesn’t look good or is missing a component
  • Complete the selling points and some kind of visual for each
  • Complete another project idea
  • Complete a “Works Consulted” and link through our Smore. I don’t know how to link a Word Document, but we could place it in a PPT and save it as a .jpg or put it in a Prezi and link to it.
  • Do some “collaborating” on the storyboard and product pages of our Wiki

I will do the second project idea, the WC page, and I was thinking of something that focuses more on librarians...Are all your sources listed on either the GD prewrite sheet or the wiki prewrite page? Or did you find some other materials that you didn’t list?
No, everything I used is on the prewrite page of the wiki. Okay, great.
With the selling points on the smore: what is going in the boxes? Were you thinking of pics? Well, I wasn’t exactly sure. I was thinking maybe some kind of visual - not necessarily a picture, but some visual representation, particularly when there is research to back up that point. For example, the stats for the anxiety reduction, there is a stat for college students saying that like 84% felt that through following the ISP steps they could complete the project well, that kind of thing. We can change it, though. No, I think it’s a good idea. OK. So I guess, what’s the next step? it seems I have quite a bit of work to do. You’ve done so much already, it’s time for a break. I am happy to help with whatever - and also please feel free to change up anything. This was just an idea - I’m sure there are lots of other things that could be even better. Yes, perhaps. However, I feel like I need to focus on the requirements that are left before I start tweaking anything that is already completed. That makes sense. ARe there any ideas or issues we need to discuss further tonight? Not really that I can think of, other than what we already talked about. Okay, when do you want to reconvene? Of course, I will email you when I have breaking info or products. OK that sounds good - do you want to still plan on Wednesday evening at 7 How about WEd @ 8”30? Too late for you? No, 830 is fine with me Terrific. Don’t forget to post discussion stuff or email stuff into the wiki. . Should we start on the product page this time? Also, we need to put the storyboard.
Post on product page: Do You mean final page? We have been using the storyboard page lately.
Yes that is what I meant - final product page. What I’m talking about is the storyboard for the video - like in the sample wiki page she did. I put it in this document, not on the wiki. You mean the chart above? Yes. I basically cut and pasted the same chart she had in her example. No problem; I’ll paste it into the wiki SB page. OK. Ok, Wed night then? Yes that sounds good Fabuloso! Have a good evening! Same to you! Welcome back to the civilian world! It is a transition...even for a few days. I can’t even imagine. We were lucky and got a snow day today. Would be nice if there was some snow down there, too. It’s pretty cold, no snow necessary. Ok have a good evening and I will talk to you Wednesday eve bye
